Rick began his journey of harvesting sea salt at his beach home on Saturna Island in 2019 and he was immediately fascinated with the entire process of salt making.
For months he experimented with the different ways the crystals would form; sun drying versus evaporation, creating crystals versus salt flakes. Once he had mastered that, he tried different ways to incorporate natural flavours, like the local native salal and blackberries, and how to best preserve those flavours in the finished salt.
His friends and family were the fortunate recipients of his experiments and it wasn't long before people began encouraging him to market what they called the best sea salt they had ever tasted.
Rick is a member of the Haida Nation and belongs to the Skidegate band in the Haida Gwaii. Today he spends as much time as he can in the Southern Gulf Islands and divides his time between making delicious sea salt and creating beautiful cedar paddle boards and kayaks.
